Back to school after COVID-19, how do we help anxious children?
As we all start back at school it is with some trepidation that we all venture into the classrooms with thoughts for our safety and that of our families. We all want our children to return to school to commence with their education, however the question many people will be asking is:
How can I help my child to maximise their learning when they are anxious about covid-19?
Many children returning to school will be anxious and slightly unsettled as restrictions within school are implemented. ‘Do not cross the yellow line’ – The line creating a boundary around the teacher’s desk.
No sharing of school resources, less contact with friends due to two students per desk, consuming lunches in the classroom, and the list goes on…
We must keep our minds focused on the children and remember that they will have many questions wonder about the constant changes and, above all else we want them to learn. So, what is the best way to support them??
- First and foremost, it’s important that we answer their questions honestly, if their questions are not answered they will fill in the gaps themselves which can escalate worry and anxiety.
- Keep routine, ensure children are settled, have a regular bedtime as enabling them to get plenty of sleep.
- Eat healthy, we can all be forgiven for mass baking during the lockdown and slipping into unhealthy habits, grazing between meals ( my fridge has just about issued a restraining order on to me) However, a good breakfast and a hot healthy meal at tea time as well as school lunch? packed lunch is required, we can’t be having a wonder to the fridge mid lesson or stating impending hunger 30 mins after breakfast which has been happening in my home and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
- With all children if we notice that they may be struggling with their work after falling behind, they may require a few months of private 1-1 tuition just to get them back on track and up to speed. This will increase their confidence and help us all to get back on track.
